Frankies Bikinis

California beach culture

Founded by 17-year-old Francesca Aiello in Malibu. California beach culture distilled into swimwear.

Frankies Bikinis

A Teenager's Malibu Dream

Born on the Beach (2012)

Francesca Aiello was 17 years old when she founded Frankies Bikinis from her family home in Malibu in 2012. What began as a teenager's passion project — hand-sewing bikinis from fabrics she loved — would grow into one of the most recognizable swimwear brands in the world, capturing the California beach lifestyle with an authenticity that established brands struggled to replicate.

Aiello grew up on the beaches of Malibu, and her designs reflected that upbringing with unstudied ease. The earliest Frankies Bikinis were sold to friends and local surf shops, each pair carrying the DNA of genuine California beach culture rather than the manufactured version sold by corporate brands.

Instagram Era Pioneer

Frankies Bikinis was among the first swimwear brands to build its business primarily through Instagram, leveraging the platform's visual format to showcase California beach culture. Aiello's personal social media presence — documenting real beach days, real friends, and real Malibu sunsets — created brand content that felt authentic because it was.

Celebrity adoption came organically. Models and actresses who lived in or visited Malibu discovered the brand through Aiello's social network and wore Frankies Bikinis without compensation. The resulting social media visibility generated more effective marketing than any paid campaign could.

The Aesthetic

Frankies Bikinis' aesthetic was unapologetically Malibu: feminine, playful, and slightly bohemian. Prints ranged from tropical florals to tie-dye to gingham. Silhouettes emphasized adjustability and versatility — bikini tops that could be worn multiple ways, bottoms with adjustable ties.

Beyond Swim

The brand expanded into clothing, loungewear, and intimates, building a comprehensive lifestyle brand around its California beach identity. Each category extension maintained the relaxed, feminine aesthetic that defined the swimwear, creating a cohesive wardrobe for the beach-adjacent life.
