The Crown Jewel of Italian Lingerie
Ada Masotti and the Bologna Atelier (1954)
In 1954, in a small atelier in Bologna, Italy, a master corset maker named Ada Masotti founded a lingerie workshop that she called La Perla — "The Pearl." It was a name that captured her philosophy: that intimate garments should be as precious and perfect as a natural pearl, formed through patience and craft.
Bologna in the 1950s was the epicenter of Italy's post-war cultural renaissance. The city's tradition of textile craftsmanship, combined with the optimism of the economic boom, created the perfect conditions for a luxury lingerie house. Ada Masotti brought a corsetiere's precision to a new vision: lingerie as art.
The Rise to Luxury Dominance (1960s-1980s)
Under the leadership of Ada's son, Alberto Masotti, La Perla expanded from a local atelier into Italy's most prestigious lingerie brand. Alberto understood that luxury lingerie required not just beautiful design but technical mastery. He invested heavily in proprietary fabrics, patented construction techniques, and recruited artisans from Italy's finest textile traditions.
By the 1970s, La Perla had become synonymous with the very concept of luxury intimates. The brand pioneered the use of silk jersey, Leavers lace, and Swarovski crystal embellishments in lingerie. Each piece was constructed with the attention to detail normally reserved for haute couture.
The company's factory in Bologna became a temple of craftsmanship. Some garments required over 20 hours of handwork. Lace was sourced from the finest mills in Calais, France, and Caudry. Silk came from Lake Como. Every detail was obsessively controlled.
Ready-to-Wear and Global Expansion (1990s-2000s)
In the 1990s, La Perla expanded into ready-to-wear fashion, swimwear, and nightwear. The brand opened flagship boutiques on Madison Avenue, Bond Street, and Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore — positioning itself alongside Chanel, Dior, and Hermes.
The red carpet became La Perla's most powerful showroom. When Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, or Scarlett Johansson stepped out in a gown with a sheer panel, the lingerie underneath was invariably La Perla.
Turbulence and Transformation (2007-Present)
The 2007 sale to private equity firm JH Partners began a turbulent period. The brand changed hands multiple times — passing through Silvio Scaglia's ownership, a 2017 rescue by the Sapinda Group, and financial restructuring.
Through every upheaval, the atelier in Bologna continued to produce some of the most exquisite lingerie on earth. The brand's heritage collections — particularly the Maison line of hand-finished pieces — remain the gold standard against which all luxury lingerie is measured.
La Perla endures because what Ada Masotti understood in 1954 remains true: there will always be women who want the most beautiful intimate garments that human hands can create.
