Paris's New Atelier of Desire
Graphic Design Meets French Tradition (2017)
Livy was founded in 2017 in Paris by Lisa Chavy, a veteran of the French lingerie industry who had spent years designing for heritage houses before creating her own brand. Livy (a rearrangement of the letters in her surname) was built to bridge the gap between traditional French lingerie savoir-faire and the graphic, modern aesthetic of contemporary fashion.
Chavy's experience with heritage brands had given her deep knowledge of French lace-making, pattern cutting, and the specific construction techniques that distinguished French lingerie from all others. She brought this expertise to a brand that spoke a more contemporary design language.
The Graphic Strap
Livy's most recognizable design signature was its use of graphic elastic strapping — bold, visible straps that created geometric patterns across the body. These straps were designed to be seen, not hidden, transforming the bra from an invisible foundation garment into a visible fashion element.
This approach was culturally resonant in an era when lingerie-as-outerwear had become an established fashion trend. Livy's pieces were designed to work equally well under a blazer and over a camisole — or entirely on their own.
French Manufacturing
Livy maintained production in France, using French lace mills and French construction techniques. The brand's manufacturing preserved the artisanal quality of traditional French lingerie while applying it to modern designs that would have been unrecognizable in the ateliers of a generation ago.
Celebrity Endorsement
Livy gained significant visibility through its association with Rihanna, who wore the brand and subsequently collaborated with it. The Rihanna connection introduced Livy to a global audience and positioned it at the intersection of French tradition and contemporary celebrity culture.
