The Softest Underwear in Britain
A Fabric Discovery (2017)
Katie Sheridan founded Stripe & Stare in 2017 after discovering a fabric that would define the brand: TENCEL modal made from sustainably harvested beechwood pulp. The material was extraordinarily soft — measurably softer than conventional cotton — and produced with a closed-loop process that recycled 99% of the water and solvents used in manufacturing.
Based in London, Stripe & Stare launched with a proposition that was as tactile as it was philosophical: underwear should feel incredible against the skin, and that feeling shouldn't come at the environment's expense.
The Beechwood Revolution
TENCEL modal, derived from European beechwood trees grown without irrigation or genetic modification, represented a genuine advance in sustainable textiles. The fiber was naturally breathable, moisture-wicking, and resistant to bacterial growth. It maintained its softness through hundreds of washes — a durability that contrasted sharply with the rapid degradation of cheaper synthetics.
Stripe & Stare built its entire product identity around this material advantage. While other brands positioned sustainability as a feature alongside others, Stripe & Stare made it the product's primary selling point. The softness wasn't a bonus; it was the reason to buy.
The Box Set Model
The brand popularized the underwear box set — curated collections of coordinating knickers packaged in gift-ready boxes. This approach transformed underwear from a solitary, functional purchase into a gifting occasion and a small luxury. The box sets became bestsellers, particularly during holiday seasons.
British Identity
Stripe & Stare leaned into its British identity with characteristically understated confidence. The brand's prints, colors, and marketing voice reflected a distinctly British sensibility — playful without being loud, premium without being pretentious. Collaborations with British artists and designers reinforced the brand's cultural rootedness.
