BCBGeneration

BCBGeneration

BCBGeneration is the younger, lower-priced label of BCBG Max Azria, the Los Angeles fashion house that Max Azria founded in 1989. It was launched in 2008 as a young contemporary line, and after the parent company's bankruptcy in 2017 its name passed to Marquee Brands, a New York brand-management firm that licenses it to other manufacturers. The lingerie, sleepwear and swim pieces found under the BCBGeneration name belong to that licensed period and its run-up.

A house named for good taste

BCBG takes its initials from the French phrase "bon chic, bon genre," roughly "good style, good attitude," and the name told American shoppers exactly where Max Azria wanted to sit: French-sounding polish at department-store prices. The company was headquartered in downtown Los Angeles. It opened its first freestanding stores in Brentwood and San Francisco in its early years, showed at New York Fashion Week from 1996 and added footwear, eveningwear, bridesmaid dresses and eventually a full bridal line.

Swimwear arrived early. The company's own timeline places its first swimwear and sunwear collections in 1997 and 1998, a decade before BCBGeneration existed. That matters for anyone dating a piece: a BCBG swimsuit is not automatically a BCBGeneration swimsuit, and the two labels were sold side by side for years.

BCBGeneration, the 2008 diffusion line

By the late 2000s most American contemporary designers had a second line, and BCBGeneration was Azria's. It was aimed at a younger customer with a smaller budget, and it traded on the parent name while keeping the clothes simpler and cheaper.

Diffusion lines like this tend to spread into categories the main house never made. Underwear, sleepwear and swimwear are the usual targets, because they sell on name recognition and print rather than on tailoring, and because a specialist manufacturer can produce them under license without the fashion house touching a sewing machine. BCBGeneration followed that pattern. Which companies held its intimates and swim licenses, and in which years, is not documented in any source available for this entry.

Bankruptcy and the brand-management years

BCBG Max Azria Group filed for Chapter 11 protection on February 28, 2017. In July of that year Marquee Brands and Global Brands Group bought the group's intellectual property and related assets. Marquee, founded in 2014 and backed by the investment firm Neuberger Berman, makes its living this way: it buys the names of retailers and labels that have failed or stalled, then licenses them to manufacturers and retailers who make and sell the goods.

Marquee later brought in partners including G-III and JS Group to run parts of the BCBG business. Centric Brands also held a license for a time before returning it. For BCBGeneration this meant that the name on the tag and the company behind the garment were no longer the same thing. The label became an asset on a licensing roster alongside names such as Laura Ashley, Ben Sherman and Body Glove.

It is a familiar route in the lingerie business. Frederick's of Hollywood is another American name that outlived the company that built it. The difference is that BCBGeneration was a fashion label that wandered into intimates, while Frederick's was a lingerie house from the start.

The lingerie and sleepwear under the name

This encyclopedia holds 64 catalog records under BCBGeneration. Licensed fashion-name intimates of this kind usually mean soft-cup bras and bralettes, lace-trimmed briefs, chemises and pajama sets, often in prints carried over from the ready-to-wear. No source checked here gives the maker, the launch year or the price range of BCBGeneration's lingerie specifically, so those details are left open rather than guessed.

The current position is easy to check. The old bcbgeneration.com address now redirects to bcbg.com, which sells only BCBGMAXAZRIA dresses, ready-to-wear, jackets and suiting. Its menu carries no lingerie, sleepwear or swimwear. The younger label's name survives on licensed goods, but its own storefront has been folded back into the parent brand's.
