Billet Doux is a French lingerie brand created in 1996 by Wolf Lingerie, a family of brands based at La Wantzenau, just north of Strasbourg in Alsace. It sells colorful, comfortable everyday bras and briefs in cup sizes A to D, under the slogan "la lingerie des femmes qui n'en font qu'à leur tête," lingerie for women who do as they please. The name is French for a love letter.
Wolf Lingerie, Alsace, 1947
Billet Doux makes sense only inside its parent. Wolf Lingerie describes itself as a lingerie specialist since 1947, and French Wikipedia dates the company's founding to that year, near Strasbourg. Its headquarters are at La Wantzenau, a small town on the edge of the Strasbourg area.
Wolf is a design-led manufacturer rather than a single label. According to Wikipedia, all of its products are still designed in Alsace, where a studio of more than 30 people, including stylists, pattern makers and seamstresses, produces up to 200 lines a year for the French and international markets. The company's own site puts the total workforce at about 180 people, 155 of them in France.
The group has built and bought a stable of names, each with its own job:
| Brand | Year | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Billet Doux | 1996 | creative everyday lingerie, cups A to D |
| Sans Complexe | 1998 | larger cup sizes, up to G |
| Rosy Paris | acquired 2001 | older label, itself dating from 1947 |
| Oups by Sans Complexe | 2013 | offshoot of Sans Complexe |
| Playboy lingerie | 2013 | licensed line |
| Playboy Men Underwear | 2015 | licensed menswear |
Wikipedia also records that Wolf Lingerie changed hands in 2022, without naming the new owners in the version the museum read.
A love letter in cups A to D
In Wolf's current lineup Billet Doux is the oldest of the in-house names, and it was given the younger, lighter end of the range. Its sister Sans Complexe, launched two years later, took the fuller cups. The split is a neat piece of portfolio logic. Rather than stretch one label across every size and every customer, Wolf gave each half of the size chart its own name and personality.
Billet Doux's brand page sums up the offer as "créative et confortable," and organizes it around three ideas: comfort, fantasy and seduction. In practice that means bright colorways, printed fabrics and visible lace details on shapes that can be worn every day. The brand's other line, "pour les corps en mouvement et les esprits libres," for bodies in motion and free spirits, points the same way: this is lingerie for a woman on her feet all day, not for a special occasion.
Recent collections carry women's first names and mood titles, among them Anouk, Valéria, Céleste and Zen Attitude, each offered in several colorways.
Certification and the WE ACT program
Billet Doux states that its collections are certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, the textile label that tests finished products for harmful substances. That is a meaningful claim in a category worn against the skin, and one that a buyer can check, since certified products carry a certificate number.
The brand also points to "WE ACT," Wolf's corporate social responsibility program, which it describes as turning "engagements en actions," commitments into actions, with attention to the planet, partners, employees and women in general. The site does not publish targets or audit results, so the museum reports the program as the brand presents it.
Where Billet Doux sits in French lingerie
French lingerie is often discussed through its luxury houses and the big high-street chains. Billet Doux belongs to a less glamorous layer: brands designed by regional manufacturers and priced for everyday buying. Such companies rarely make headlines. Wolf's model, design kept in Alsace and a handful of brands each aimed at one customer, has carried the business through more than 75 years and at least one change of ownership.
Billet Doux still answers customer calls from an Alsace number, and its site leads with its newest collections and an Instagram feed of the Anouk, Valéria and Céleste sets.
