Guess Lingerie

Guess Lingerie

Guess Lingerie is the name under which this archive files intimate apparel sold by Guess, the American fashion company founded in Los Angeles in 1981 by the brothers Georges, Maurice, Armand and Paul Marciano. Guess is a denim and lifestyle house first, and its underwear sits among many product categories rather than at the center. Since January 2026 Authentic Brands Group has held a 51 percent stake, and the company no longer trades on the New York Stock Exchange.

From Marseille to Los Angeles: the Guess origin

The Marciano brothers came from a Moroccan family and grew up in Marseille, where they worked in clothing. French Wikipedia ties their move to California to the political climate after François Mitterrand's election in 1981. In Los Angeles they set out to give American denim a European fit. English Wikipedia describes the company as starting that year as a book of styles, then turning to jeans in a light, form-fitting denim with zippers at the ankles.

The breakout product was the "Marilyn", a stonewashed jean with three zippers. The brand name has a well-known origin story. Georges, who spoke little English at the time, saw an advertisement asking "Guess where's the best hamburger?" for the Big Boy chain and decided the word sounded good in every language.

Black-and-white photography and the Guess girl

Guess introduced black-and-white advertising in 1985, and those campaigns won a string of design awards. They also made the "Guess girl" a career path. The campaigns launched or lifted a series of models, including Claudia Schiffer, who returned to pose for the brand's 30th anniversary in 2012. That imagery matters for the intimates story. Guess sold denim with the same body-conscious, sun-and-skin mood that lingerie advertising uses, and the step from fitted jeans and bodysuits to bras and briefs was a short one for the brand.

Brothers, a buyout and a public listing

The four brothers did not always agree. Georges favored selling through department stores such as Bloomingdale's, while the others wanted wider distribution, including discount channels. In 1993 he sold his stake to his brothers for $214.2 million. Guess went public in 1996, and in 2004 it launched Marciano, an upscale women's line of clothing and accessories, along with a lower-priced collection for its outlet stores. G by Guess followed in April 2007 as a younger mid-priced label.

The company has long licensed its name for watches, jewelry, fragrance, bags and shoes. Wikipedia lists those categories but does not describe how the intimates line is made or by whom, and we did not find a source that does.

Guess intimates in the archive

The archive holds 10 products under the Guess Lingerie name. The brand's own category pages for underwear were not reachable when we checked, so this entry does not describe the line's fabrics, cuts or maker from a source, and it does not guess at a launch year. What can be said is where the line sits. Guess underwear is a fashion-brand extension, priced and styled to match the main collection, rather than a fit-led specialist range of the kind sold by Triumph. Its nearest relative in history is Calvin Klein Underwear, another denim-born American label that moved from jeans into briefs and bras on the strength of its advertising.

Readers holding a Guess piece can still place it. The care label gives the country of manufacture and fiber content, and the construction of the cups and the leg elastic says more about the factory than the name on the waistband. The archive's identification tool can compare a photograph against documented garments.

Ownership in 2025 and 2026

In August 2025 Guess announced a deal that took it private. The transaction closed in January 2026, with Authentic Brands Group taking a 51 percent stake and the shares leaving the NYSE under the ticker GES. Authentic is a brand-licensing company, so the change points toward more of the licensing model Guess already used for accessories. Headquarters remain in Los Angeles, the city where the Marciano brothers started in 1981.
