Honeylove was founded in 2018 in Los Angeles by Betsie Larkin, a singer-songwriter turned entrepreneur who channeled her frustration with uncomfortable, poorly designed shapewear into a brand that would challenge the category's dominant player. In a market that Spanx had owned for nearly two decades, Honeylove arrived with a proposition: shapewear didn't have to be a punishment.

Larkin's key insight was that existing shapewear treated the entire torso as a single compression zone. The result was garments that squeezed everywhere equally — restricting breathing, creating discomfort, and occasionally producing the "muffin top" effect where compressed flesh was merely displaced rather than smoothed.

Targeted Compression

Honeylove's engineering innovation was zoned compression — different areas of the garment applied different levels of support based on the body's anatomy. The brand's proprietary construction used graduated compression panels, flexible boning in key areas, and strategically placed mesh zones that allowed movement and breathability where the body needed it.

The result was shapewear that smoothed and supported without the suffocating sensation that had defined the category. Women could wear Honeylove products through a full workday without the desperate mid-afternoon need to remove their shapewear that Spanx wearers knew intimately.

DTC Growth

Honeylove grew rapidly through digital marketing, leveraging before-and-after content and customer testimonials that demonstrated visible results. The brand's social media presence built a community of women sharing their experiences — a marketing approach that generated trust more effectively than traditional advertising.

Challenging the Monopoly

Honeylove's significance lay in challenging Spanx's near-monopoly on premium shapewear. By offering a technologically superior product with a contemporary brand identity, Honeylove demonstrated that even seemingly unassailable market positions could be disrupted through genuine product innovation.
