Jessica Simpson Lingerie & Sleepwear

Jessica Simpson Lingerie & Sleepwear

Jessica Simpson Lingerie & Sleepwear is the intimates and nightwear category of the Jessica Simpson Collection, the fashion licensing business that the American singer and actress launched in 2005. Like most of the collection, it was made by licensees rather than by Simpson's own company, which earned royalties on the name. The licensee behind the lingerie and sleepwear, and the years it held the license, are not documented in the sources available for this entry.

A celebrity brand built on licenses

The Jessica Simpson Collection started in 2005 with shoes, through a partnership with Vince Camuto, the co-founder of Nine West. Clothing followed through Tarrant Apparel Group, under lines called Princy and JS by Jessica Simpson. From there the brand spread category by category. The business grew to 22 licenses, covering apparel, footwear, handbags, luggage, fragrance, maternity wear from 2012, bedding and draperies from 2012, and an activewear line, Warm Up, from 2015.

The numbers made it one of the largest celebrity brands of its time. Reported sales reached about 750 million dollars in 2010, a figure that made it the top-selling celebrity clothing business then, and estimates put it at around one billion dollars a year by the middle of the decade. Those figures are retail sales across all licensees, not the revenue of Simpson's own company, which collected royalties.

Lingerie and sleepwear fit the model neatly. Intimates sell on name recognition and print, a specialist manufacturer can produce them under license, and stores already selling Jessica Simpson shoes and dresses were natural outlets for it.

What the lingerie line looked like

No catalog history of the lingerie license survives in the sources checked here, so this entry cannot list launch dates, the maker or price points. The 60 catalog records this encyclopedia holds under the label are the best guide. Licensed celebrity intimates of this period typically meant soft-cup bras and bralettes, lace-trimmed briefs, chemises, robes and pajama sets, priced for department stores and their off-price outlets rather than for specialist lingerie shops. That is a description of the category, not a claim about any single Jessica Simpson piece.

Sequential Brands and the buyback

In 2015 Simpson sold a majority stake in the Jessica Simpson Collection to Sequential Brands Group, a company that bought consumer brand names and licensed them out. Sequential filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on August 31, 2021. In November of that year Simpson and her mother, Tina Simpson, bought back the majority stake and regained full ownership of the collection.

The buyback is the rare case of a celebrity recovering her own name from a brand-management company. Most licensed fashion names that pass through a bankruptcy end up with another holding company instead.

Celebrity intimates before and after

Jessica Simpson's intimates belong to the earlier model of celebrity lingerie: a famous name licensed onto product made by someone else and sold through existing stores. The later model looks different. Savage X Fenty, founded by Rihanna in 2018, and Skims, co-founded by Kim Kardashian in 2019, are run as operating companies with their own design teams and direct-to-consumer sales, and they raised outside investment rather than collecting royalties.

The label today

The current Jessica Simpson website, run by the brand's own e-commerce company, sells swimwear, shoes, clothing and accessories, including jewelry, handbags, eyewear, home goods and fragrance. Its menu has no lingerie, sleepwear or shapewear section. Wikipedia lists the collection as sold through Walmart, which carried it in about 800 stores as of April 2024, as well as Dillard's, Nordstrom Rack, Macy's, Amazon and Wayfair. Whether a lingerie and sleepwear license is still active under that distribution could not be confirmed.
