Wacoal

Japanese Precision in the Art of Intimate Fit

Kyoto Origins (1949)

Wacoal was founded in 1949 in Kyoto, Japan, by Koichi Tsukamoto. The company's origins in the ancient capital of Japan — a city synonymous with traditional craftsmanship, attention to detail, and aesthetic refinement — shaped its DNA in ways that remain evident today.

Tsukamoto founded the company during the tumultuous post-war period, when Japanese industry was rebuilding from the ground up. He saw an opportunity to apply Japanese manufacturing philosophy — precision, quality, continuous improvement — to women's intimate apparel. The name "Wacoal" derives from a Japanese expression meaning "harmony" and "cooperation."

The Human Science Research Center

Wacoal's most distinctive asset is its Human Science Research Center, established in 1964. For over sixty years, the center has conducted the most extensive and meticulous research into women's body shapes, movements, and fit preferences of any lingerie company in the world.

The research program has measured over 45,000 women across different age groups, body types, and nationalities. Data points include not just static measurements but dynamic data — how breasts move during different activities, how body shapes change over time, how posture affects fit.

This data drives every aspect of Wacoal's product development. Cup shapes, wire curves, strap placement, and fabric tension are all determined by empirical research rather than designer intuition. The result is products that fit with a precision that customers describe as revelatory.

Product Innovation

Wacoal's research-driven approach has produced numerous innovations:

  • CW-X: A sports conditioning line that uses targeted support principles derived from athletic tape, creating garments that support muscles and joints during exercise
  • Ipex: A bra construction system using multi-part cups that conform to individual breast shapes
  • GocochiI: A wireless bra technology that provides underwire-level support without metal, using shaped fabric panels

Global Expansion

From its Kyoto base, Wacoal expanded first throughout Asia and then globally. The company now operates in over 50 countries. In the United States, Wacoal acquired the DTC brand b.tempt'd and operates both Wacoal and b.tempt'd as complementary lines — Wacoal for premium precision fit, b.tempt'd for youthful, trend-driven styles.

The company also acquired Intimacy — a specialty bra fitting retail chain — strengthening its connection to expert fitting, which is central to the brand's value proposition.

The Japanese Aesthetic

Wacoal's design aesthetic reflects Japanese values: refinement without ostentation, beauty in precision, and respect for the wearer's comfort above all. Wacoal bras are not designed to provoke or to make a fashion statement. They are designed to disappear — to fit so perfectly that the wearer forgets she is wearing anything at all.

This philosophy has earned Wacoal a devoted following among women who have struggled to find well-fitting bras from other brands. The combination of extensive size ranges, research-driven construction, and meticulous quality control makes Wacoal the standard for fit in the global lingerie industry.
