The Short Answer
A Brazilian has very narrow side seams at the hip bones with moderate rear coverage. A cheeky has standard-width sides with a scooped back panel. Same amount of skin showing, different place where the fabric was removed.
Construction Side by Side
| Feature | Brazilian | Cheeky |
|---|---|---|
| Where fabric is reduced | At the sides (narrow hip) | At the back (scooped panel) |
| Side seams | Very narrow, almost string-width | Standard width |
| Back panel | Moderate, proportional | Scooped at the bottom |
| Rise | Low to mid | Mid |
| Leg elongation | Yes (high-cut sides create illusion) | Less |
Visual Test
Look at the sides. If the hip area is cut down to almost nothing (narrow strap or thin elastic at the hip bone) — it's a Brazilian. If the sides are standard width but the back has a visible scoop removing fabric from the lower cheeks — it's a cheeky.
Which Is More Flattering?
Brazilian: better for creating the illusion of longer legs due to the high-cut sides. Favored in swimwear and by brands targeting the Latin American market.
Cheeky: better under most clothing because the standard-width waistband stays put and doesn't ride up. More popular in the North American market as everyday wear.
