The Short Answer
A bikini brief has full rear coverage — the back panel covers both cheeks completely. A cheeky has a scooped-out back that exposes the lower half of the cheeks while covering the upper half. Same front, different back.
Construction Side by Side
| Feature | Bikini Brief | Cheeky |
|---|---|---|
| Front | Standard mid-rise panel | Same — standard mid-rise panel |
| Back | Full coverage, no scoop | Scooped, lower cheeks exposed |
| Waistband | Standard width | Standard width |
| Rise | Mid (at or just below hip) | Mid (same as bikini) |
| VPL risk | Moderate | Lower — less fabric at the rear |
How to Tell Them Apart
Lay them flat and compare the back panels. The bikini brief has a back panel roughly the same width as the front — it's symmetric. The cheeky has a back panel that narrows toward the bottom, with a visible scoop or curve that removes fabric from the lower cheek area.
From the front, they look identical.
The Rise of Cheeky
Cheeky panties exploded in popularity around 2010 when Aerie (American Eagle's lingerie line) and Victoria's Secret made them a core category. They hit a sweet spot: more coverage than a thong (more comfortable for daily wear) but less fabric than a bikini brief (fewer panty lines, more visually interesting for lingerie sets).
By 2020, cheeky had become the single best-selling panty silhouette in North America, overtaking both thongs and bikini briefs.
When to Wear Each
Bikini brief: The all-rounder. Maximum comfort, full coverage, no adjusting needed. Best under skirts, loose pants, and when you simply don't want to think about your underwear.
Cheeky: The bikini upgrade. Works under the same clothing but looks better as lingerie and produces slightly fewer panty lines. The go-to "daily but cute" option.
