The Short Answer
Jersey knit is a knitted fabric (usually cotton or cotton blend) with visible vertical rib columns and a soft, t-shirt-like hand. Microfiber is a woven or knit synthetic with ultra-fine filaments that create a smooth, almost textureless surface. Both stretch. Both are comfortable. But they look, feel, and perform differently.
Fabric Properties Side by Side
| Property | Jersey Knit | Microfiber |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Single-knit loop structure | Tightly woven/knit ultra-fine filaments |
| Fiber | Usually cotton or cotton blend | Nylon or polyester |
| Surface texture | Visible vertical ribs | Smooth, nearly featureless |
| Sheen | None — completely matte | Subtle silky sheen |
| Stretch | Good crosswise stretch | Moderate, excellent recovery |
| Touch | Soft, cozy, t-shirt-like | Smooth, silky, slippery |
| Breathability | Excellent (if cotton) | Moderate |
| Moisture | Absorbs, holds | Wicks, dries fast |
| VPL risk | Higher — thicker fabric | Lower — thin, flat edges |
| Durability | Fades, pills over time | Holds shape and color |
How to Tell Them Apart: The Visual Test
Look at the surface under good light.
- Jersey knit: you'll see vertical columns of tiny V-shaped loops — the classic knit pattern. The surface has visible texture and dimension. It looks like a thin version of a sweater knit.
- Microfiber: the surface appears almost perfectly smooth. No visible loops, ribs, or weave pattern. It looks like the filaments have melted into a single continuous surface.
The touch test confirms: jersey feels soft and cozy (like your favorite t-shirt). Microfiber feels smooth and slightly slippery (like a second skin).
Common in Lingerie
Jersey knit is the fabric of comfort-first lingerie. Soft bralettes, sleep camisoles, lounge shorts, everyday panties — anything where the design brief is "as comfortable as your t-shirt" is probably jersey. Brands like Baserange, Organic Basics, and Hanro excel in jersey knit basics.
Microfiber is the fabric of function-first lingerie. T-shirt bras, seamless panties, invisible-under-clothing styles, and shapewear use microfiber for its smooth lines and minimal show-through. It's the default for anything designed to disappear under a fitted outfit.
The choice maps to lifestyle moments: jersey for home and lounging, microfiber for work and going out.
