The Short Answer
Both sit between a thong and a bikini brief in coverage. The tanga has high-cut sides with a narrow hip, while the Brazilian typically has very narrow side seams and slightly more rear coverage. In practice, many brands use the names interchangeably.
Construction Side by Side
| Feature | Tanga | Brazilian |
|---|---|---|
| Back coverage | Partial — upper cheeks covered | Moderate — slightly more than tanga |
| Side construction | High-cut but with fabric at the hip | Very narrow side seams, almost string-width |
| Rise | Mid to high | Low to mid |
| Origin | European lingerie term | Brazilian beachwear adaptation |
The Honest Truth
These two styles overlap so much that even lingerie industry professionals disagree on the boundary. If you line up ten tangas and ten Brazilians from different brands, you'll find pieces from each group that could easily belong to the other.
The most reliable distinction: side construction. A tanga typically has a wider fabric panel at the hip. A Brazilian has its signature narrow, almost string-like side seams that sit right on the hip bone.
When It Matters
For shopping: don't choose based on the name. Look at the product photo and check the side and back construction.
For the classifier and encyclopedia: we maintain both terms because (a) brands label them differently and users search for both, and (b) the side construction difference is real even if subtle.
