The Council of Fashion Designers of America is marking three decades of its scholarship program with a record-breaking $1.5 million in awards this year. Since 1996, the CFDA Scholarship Fund has funneled millions into nurturing emerging talent, and this latest round represents its largest single-year payout.

New partners this year include the Bezos Earth Fund, Carolina Herrera, the Melvin and Monique Rodriguez Family Foundation, the PVH Foundation, and Veronica Beard. They join the long-running Geoffrey Beene Design Scholar Award, which is endowed in perpetuity, and a new award honoring Liz Claiborne, also set up as a permanent fund.

Scholarships are merit-based and open to students across the U.S., with a focus on pushing boundaries in areas such as wearable tech, digital fabrication, traditional craftsmanship, and sustainable sourcing. Recipients come from institutions including Parsons School of Design, the Rhode Island School of Design, and Otis College of Art and Design - schools where CFDA members have long mentored students in person.

"This fund represents one of the most important things we can do to keep the industry alive," said Stan Herman, CFDA president from 1991 to 2006, crediting members Monika Tilley and Patricia Underwood for pushing the initiative forward. "We were pumping new life into our world and began to truly serve the industry."

Monique Rodriguez, founder of Mielle Organics, noted that her family foundation's partnership is about removing barriers. "How are people supposed to get in the door if they can't even get to the door?" she said. Emilie Rubinfeld, president of Carolina Herrera, added that the program "transforms the lives of the next generation of designers" and deepens the brand's commitment to women in creative fields.

CFDA CEO Steven Kolb called the $1.5 million milestone a reaffirmation of the council's mission to shape American fashion through education.
