Karolína Kurková

Czech model Karolína Kurková walked her first Victoria's Secret Fashion Show at sixteen, in 2000, and went on to appear in every show through 2008 and again in 2010. She was a contracted Victoria's Secret Angel from 2005 to 2009, one of the faces of the brand during the years its runway show reached its largest television audiences.

A Prague agency at fifteen

Kurková was born on February 28, 1984, in Czechoslovakia. Her career began when a friend sent her photographs to an agency in Prague. At fifteen she had her first runway booking and print work, and she moved on to Milan, where she signed a contract with Miuccia Prada.

The rise was quick. She appeared in American Vogue in September 1999 and, after moving to New York at seventeen, was on the magazine's cover in February 2001. Her agencies have included Ford Models in New York, Marilyn in Paris and Storm in London.

Teenage years on the Victoria's Secret runway

The chain founded by Roy Raymond had turned its show into an annual broadcast event by the time Kurková joined it. Victoria's Secret put her in the 2000 show, which was streamed online, when she was still sixteen.

The Star of Victoria, 2002

In the 2002 show she wore the "Star of Victoria" Fantasy Bra, the jeweled piece the brand built each year as the centerpiece of its runway. Being chosen for the Fantasy Bra was the clearest sign of a model's standing with the company, and she wore it at eighteen.

Karolína Kurková as a contracted Angel, 2005 to 2009

The Angel contract came in 2005. She walked the 2006 and 2007 shows under it, and in 2007 the Victoria's Secret Angels received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with Kurková among them. People magazine named her among its 100 most beautiful people in 2008. Her contract ran until 2009, and she returned to the Victoria's Secret runway once more in 2010.

Her years with the brand covered the height of the push-up and padded-bra era, when the show sold one idea of glamour to a mass market. Kurková's appeal to the company was that she moved between that commercial world and high fashion without friction. She worked for Prada, appeared on Vogue covers and still fronted the most mainstream lingerie chain in America.

Earlier versions of this page dated her Angel years to 2002 to 2008 and said she replaced Gisele Bundchen as the face of the brand. The contract dates above come from the Victoria's Secret model records, and the replacement claim could not be confirmed, so it is dropped.
