Francoise Saget

Francoise Saget

Françoise Saget is a French mail-order company for household linen and nightwear, founded in 1982 by the Breton cosmetics entrepreneur Yves Rocher and based at Les Fougerêts in Morbihan, Brittany. Its core trade is bed and bath linen, but it also sells pajamas, nightgowns, slips, bras and underwear, which is how a linen house ends up in a lingerie encyclopedia.

Visitors expecting a couture lingerie house will not find one here. Françoise Saget is a catalog business that sells cotton sheets to French households and, alongside them, the sort of nightdress a customer buys from the same pages. It deserves an entry for that reason. Much of the world's sleepwear has always been sold this way, by post, next to the towels.

A linen business from the Yves Rocher stable

French Wikipedia's article on Yves Rocher records that in 1982 he founded the Françoise Saget company to sell textile products such as household linen. Rocher was born in La Gacilly in 1930 and had founded his cosmetics company there in 1959. Les Fougerêts, where Françoise Saget is registered, is the neighboring commune.

The French business register confirms the dates. Françoise Saget is a simplified joint-stock company (SAS) created on 1 June 1982, registered at the Domaine de la Motte in Les Fougerêts. Its official activity code is 47.91B, the INSEE class for distance selling from a specialized catalog. In 2024 it reported a workforce in the 100 to 199 band.

The pairing made commercial sense. Yves Rocher had built his beauty company largely through mail order, and a second catalog aimed at the same households, selling sheets and nightwear instead of creams, could use the same know-how in direct marketing, postal logistics and customer files. The company's present ownership is not stated on its brand pages, and this entry does not guess at it.

Who was Françoise Saget?

The brand's own manifesto begins: "Françoise Saget au tout début, c'est l'histoire d'une femme" (at the very start, Françoise Saget is the story of a woman). It does not say whether she was a real person or a name chosen for the catalog. Neither source consulted for this entry settles the question, so it stays open here.

Nightwear, slips and the linen cupboard

The company calls itself a specialist in quality household linen and says it has been at it for more than 40 years. Its catalog is organized like a home: bedding, bath linen, table linen, cushions and curtains, and a separate department for nightwear and lingerie.

That department covers the classic French home wardrobe:

  • pajamas and long nightgowns, the core of the range
  • slips and camisoles
  • bras and briefs, mostly in soft, practical cuts
  • homewear and loungewear for wearing indoors

Most of it is cut from cotton and cotton blends, and the company stresses Oeko-Tex certification on its textiles. It also offers personalized embroidery, a habit carried over from the linen side, where monogrammed towels and pillowcases are an old French custom. A nightdress and a matching set of embroidered sheets from the same order is very much the Françoise Saget idea of a gift.

Where it sits in French intimate apparel

French lingerie is usually told through its fashion houses, from Chantal Thomass to the big Lyon and Paris makers. Mail order is the other half of the story. Catalog firms such as 3 Suisses put underwear and nightwear into millions of French homes for decades, and Françoise Saget belongs to the same tradition, with a narrower range and an older, more home-centered customer.

Its pitch is comfort rather than seduction. The brand's manifesto talks about women's well-being at home and about "joie intérieure," inner joy. That is a fair description of what a flannel nightgown is for.

The business still trades from Brittany and ships beyond France to Belgium and Switzerland. Forty years on, the company is still selling sheets and nightdresses side by side from a domain in rural Morbihan, a few minutes from the village where its founder grew up.
