Huit

"Modern French essentials"

Modern French lingerie essentials with clean design and accessible luxury.

Huit

Huit is a French lingerie brand founded in 1968 in Rennes, in Brittany, whose name is simply the French word for "eight." It made its reputation on soft, minimal bras and briefs, and it claims to have introduced the first wire-free design of its era. The original operating company, Huit Diffusion of Rennes, entered receivership in 2010 and was liquidated in 2020, but the brand lives on as Huit, also styled Huit8, sold online with a strong focus on the American market.

Rennes, 1968

Huit belongs to the year of its founding. In May 1968 French students and workers were in the streets. The brand's own account places itself squarely in that moment. It says it introduced "the first wire-free design," presented as lingerie for freedom and femininity rather than for structure, and it names its founding values as modernity, tradition, creativity and feminism.

The claim to the very first wire-free bra cannot be tested, since soft bras without wires existed long before 1968. What can be said is that Huit built its identity on the idea of a lighter, unstructured bra, and that it still tells its story through the wireless bra.

The company was based in Rennes, not Paris. The house describes itself as a family affair, "passed from mother to daughter, generation to generation," though it does not name the founding family in the pages checked for this entry.

Huit Diffusion and the 2010 receivership

The business behind the brand was a Rennes company called Huit Diffusion, registered as a public limited company with a management board and classed under the manufacture of underwear and fine lingerie. French records summarized by encyclopedia sources show that it was placed in receivership in February 2010. In 2020 that procedure was converted into a judicial liquidation for lack of assets.

The company's French registration number was SIREN 323 253 559, and its encyclopedia record gives the web address as huit.fr, not the .com used today. The museum's database had listed Huit as a Paris company; the records point clearly to Rennes.

The brand after the company

The liquidation of Huit Diffusion did not end the Huit name. A brand trading as Huit and Huit8 now sells through its own website, with prices and shipping terms aimed at American customers, including free shipping on US orders over $100, and with wholesale and dropship programs for other retailers. It describes itself as French luxury lingerie and presents the 1968 Rennes founding as its heritage. Who owns the brand today, and how it passed from the liquidated company to its current operator, is not stated on the site and could not be confirmed.

The current range is broader than the old core of bras and briefs:

  • lingerie, including bras, underwear and nightwear
  • everyday essentials in certified organic cotton
  • loungewear in micro modal
  • swimwear
  • an activewear line called Bien-etre

The house says it works with artisans and partners in France, Italy and Switzerland, and that it develops its own embroidery, lace and prints. Recent collections use Swiss materials, Italian silk and touches of gold thread, with a design line it calls "quiet luxury," feminine and never too much.

Where Huit sits among French brands

Huit was never a couture house in the manner of Maison Cadolle, nor an industrial group like Chantelle. Its place was the clean, unfussy middle, lingerie that looks French because of what it leaves off. The museum's archive holds no Huit products at present. The most telling detail of its later history is geographic: a brand born in Rennes in 1968, whose original company was wound up in a French court, now quotes its prices in dollars.
