One Empire Sleep

One Empire Sleep is an Australian online lingerie and sleepwear label run from the Darwin region of the Northern Territory, trading at oneempire.com.au. The business behind it, One Empire Store Pty Ltd, has been registered with an Australian Business Number since January 2020. The store describes itself as a female-owned lingerie brand and sells lace sets, babydolls, bodysuits, sleep sets and swimwear, under the self-awarded banner "Australia's Best Lingerie Brand for Women."

A lingerie label from the Top End

Most Australian lingerie brands are based in Sydney or Melbourne, where the fashion trade, the photographers and the department store buyers are. One Empire is a rare exception. Its store terms place it under the law of the Northern Territory, with a postal address at Humpty Doo, a rural town south-east of Darwin, and the national business register lists the company's main location in a Darwin postcode. The terms also acknowledge the Larrakia people as the Traditional Owners of the Darwin region, a line that roots the business in a specific place even if its customers are spread across the country.

For an online label, distance from the southern fashion cities matters less than it once did. A Shopify store, a supplier and a courier account can run from anywhere with an internet connection, and One Empire is a good example of how the web has spread small lingerie businesses far beyond the traditional garment districts.

What One Empire Sleep actually sells

The name suggests a nightwear specialist, and earlier descriptions of the brand, including the one this encyclopedia carried, presented it as a maker of silk, satin and modal sleep sets and robes. The store itself does not bear that out. Its sleepwear section is dominated by babydolls, not pajamas. The current pieces carry women's names, Estrella, Valerie, Ottavia, Kallie, Katia, Eliana and Kyara, with color in the title: a ruffled Estrella, black Valerie and Kallie, pink Ottavia and Katia, a purple Eliana and a burgundy Kyara. There is also a black lace dress called Zaya.

The fabrics on show are mainly lace and embroidered mesh rather than silk or modal. Prices run from about 75 to 110 Australian dollars, and the babydolls are sized S-M and M-L, with other pieces in S to XL. Many sizes were sold out when the store was checked, the usual pattern for a small label that orders in short runs.

Beyond nightwear, the site's menus cover lingerie sets, bodysuits, bras, knickers and thongs, slips and camis, swimwear and accessories. Orders over 150 Australian dollars come with a free gift. In other words, One Empire is a general lingerie boutique with a bedroom bias, and "Sleep" in the name refers more to the babydoll end of the market than to flannel pajamas.

The babydoll and its place in the catalog

The babydoll is an old shape with a short modern history. A short, loose nightgown, usually gathered under the bust and flaring to the upper thigh, it took its name from the 1956 film "Baby Doll" and became a staple of nightwear counters through the 1960s. Modern versions, like the ones One Empire sells, are usually built from stretch lace or sheer mesh with a soft cup or underwire at the bust, and they sit somewhere between sleepwear and lingerie. Ruffles, as on the Estrella, and contrast trims are the details most small labels use to tell their versions apart.

The color story is the other recognizable choice. Black, pink, burgundy and purple are the classic babydoll palette, and burgundy in particular has become a favorite for lingerie sold online, because it photographs richly against skin and reads as darker and more grown-up than red.

What is not known

The brand has not published a founding story, a founder profile or the location where its garments are made, and the store has no about page at the usual addresses. The company record shows an Australian private company active from 21 January 2020 and registered for GST from May 2020, which dates the business but not necessarily the first collection. The archive holds 40 One Empire Sleep products. On the evidence in hand, it is a small, female-owned Northern Territory lingerie store selling lace babydolls in black and pink, a long way from both the silk sleep sets once attributed to it and the fashion districts of the south.
