Billabong Swimwear

Billabong Swimwear is the women's swim line of Billabong, the Australian surf brand founded on 6 November 1973 on the Gold Coast, Queensland, by Gordon and Rena Merchant. The label began with boardshorts sewn at home and sold to local surf shops, and its women's range of bikinis, one-pieces and rashguards grew out of that surf-shop business. Since 2023 the brand has been owned by Authentic Brands Group.

Boardshorts on a Gold Coast kitchen table

The Merchants started small. They designed and made boardshorts at home and sold them to surf shops around the Gold Coast. Rena Merchant's triple-stitching technique gave the shorts a reputation for lasting through repeated wipeouts, and that durability became a selling point long before the brand had a marketing budget.

It is worth dwelling on that detail, because it carries straight into the swimwear. A garment worn in surf is under stress that a pool suit never sees: water pressure on every seam, sand in the fabric, constant flexing. Triple-stitched seams were a construction answer to that problem, and the same priority, a suit that stays put and stays together in the water, still runs through Billabong's women's swim.

Billabong Swimwear and the Tigerlily purchase

Billabong expanded across Australia in the 1980s and overseas by the end of that decade. In 2000 the company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, and the money raised paid for further growth, much of it through buying other brands.

For women's swimwear, the key purchase came in December 2007, when Billabong bought the Australian label Tigerlily. Wikipedia describes it as the first time the company had acquired a brand aimed exclusively at the women's market. It was a sign that the surf industry had noticed what women were actually buying at the beach: fashion-led bikinis rather than shrunken versions of men's surfwear.

Ownership changes, 2013 to 2025

The 2010s were hard for the surf brands. In 2013 Oaktree Capital Management and Centerbridge Partners refinanced Billabong and took a 40.8 percent stake. In 2018 Boardriders, Inc., the owner of Quiksilver, acquired Billabong International Limited, putting two of the biggest surf names under one roof.

In September 2023 Authentic Brands Group bought Boardriders for US$1.25 billion. Authentic is a brand-licensing company, so the day-to-day running of the business passed to licensees. One of them, Liberated Brands, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2025 and closed all Billabong retail stores in the United States. Authentic kept ownership of the Billabong name.

What the women's swim range looks like now

Billabong's current site divides women's swim into one-pieces, separate bikini tops and bikini bottoms, textured swimwear, surf swimwear, cover-ups and rashguards. The split between "surf" swimwear and the rest is telling. Surf styles generally mean higher necklines, firmer bands and more coverage, so a suit survives a duck dive. The fashion styles look more like the triangle tops and string-sided bikini bottoms found across the beachwear market.

Selling tops and bottoms separately has been standard in surf swimwear for years, and Billabong follows it. Textured swim, with ribbed or crinkled fabric, is the newer fashion element, and it sits alongside long-sleeved rashguards, the practical answer to the Australian sun.

Where Billabong sits among Australian swim labels

Compared with fashion-first Australian swim labels such as Kulani Kinis or Frankies Bikinis, Billabong comes at swimwear from the water rather than the beach towel. Its women's range is broader and more practical, and less driven by a single silhouette or print.

The museum's archive lists close to 60 Billabong Swimwear products. Half a century after two people in Queensland began triple-stitching boardshorts at home, the name now belongs to an American licensing company, and its swimsuits are designed and sold through partners around the world.
