Specializes in expertly engineered full-cup bras for larger sizes. French craftsmanship with Calais lace.

Empreinte

Empreinte is a French lingerie house founded in 1946 by Jean Le Her and based in Brest, in Brittany, that specializes in bras for fuller busts. Its range runs from a C to an H cup, and its slogan, "La beauté généreuse," roughly "generous beauty," says plainly who the brand is for. Few French labels have spent as long working on deep cups, and fewer still can date the arrival of each new cup letter in their own catalog.

Brest, not Lyon: where Empreinte comes from

Some lingerie directories place Empreinte in Lyon, close to the old French silk trade. Its home is in fact Brest, the naval port at the western tip of Brittany, where the company has its headquarters. That is an unusual base for a corsetry business. The traditional centers of French lingerie making were Lyon for silk, Calais and Caudry for lace, and the Troyes region for knitwear. A Breton bra maker grew up outside those clusters, and Empreinte built its identity on cut and construction rather than on a regional textile.

The present company was registered in 1956, ten years after Le Her started the brand. It is organized as a simplified joint-stock company (SAS), and French Wikipedia lists Magalie Le Banner and Philippe Berthaux as its directors.

1954: three cup depths in a country that hid the bust

The defining moment came in 1954. French Wikipedia's account describes a shift in fashion: the new American silhouette made a feature of the bust, where earlier dressing had preferred to conceal it. Two seamstresses working for Le Her, Odette Tardivel and a colleague recorded only as Madame Haug, responded by creating three cup depths, A, B and C, for the French market.

That was a technical decision with commercial consequences. A bra sold in a single depth per band size fits a narrow range of women. Splitting each band into graded depths is the system almost every bra now uses, and Empreinte was building it into French production in the mid-1950s.

D in 1960, E in 1962

The brand kept adding depth. The D cup arrived in 1960 and the E cup in 1962. Empreinte's sizing has stayed generous ever since: its E is described as equivalent to an F at many other brands, which matters to anyone comparing labels. Today the range stops at H. Bottoms run from size 6 to 22 in the brand's own grading.

Construction for a fuller bust

The company's own material leans on structure. It highlights a three-part cup construction in its full cup bras, the method of building a cup from three panels so that the lower panels lift and the upper panel holds and covers. It also says it uses only materials made in Europe. That is a different claim from the "Calais lace" sometimes attached to the brand in retail listings, which we could not confirm from Empreinte's own pages or from other sources.

The emphasis on support over decoration places Empreinte in a specific part of the French market. Mainstream houses such as Chantelle and Simone Pérèle cover fuller cups within much broader ranges. Empreinte has built its whole catalog around them, closer in purpose to the British full-bust specialist Elomi than to a fashion lingerie label, though with a distinctly French taste in lace, embroidery and color. The difference between a supportive full cup and a reducing style is covered in our comparison of the minimizer and the full cup.

A mid-sized Breton company

Empreinte is not a large business, and its public figures say so. The company averaged 114 employees in 2018 and reported revenue of about 12.6 million euros in 2020. In September 2011 it absorbed a company called Euro Fashion Retail. In 2018 it opened its first shop outside France, in London, a logical choice given how strong the British full-bust market is.

The brand now describes itself as a French lingerie and swimwear house, and its current marketing pairs "French elegance" with support and comfort, in that order of billing if not of priority.

Seventy-odd years after Tardivel and Haug cut their three depths, the company is still in Brest, and its range, which once stopped at C, now runs to H.
