Monica Wise started the California swimwear label LSpace in 1999, and the brand, written today as LSPACE, still carries the founder's name in many retail listings as "LSpace by Monica Wise." It began with bikinis and has grown into what the company calls a beach lifestyle brand, selling swimwear, cover-ups, clothing and activewear through its own stores, its web shop and other retailers.
Fit first
The company's own description of its founding principle is short: "fit and quality are everything." Its tagline is "That feel-good fit." Those phrases are worth taking seriously in swimwear, where fit is the hardest problem. A swimsuit has to hold its shape wet and dry, support without underwire in most styles, and stay in place through movement, all in a stretch fabric that will be exposed to chlorine, salt and sun.
The brand frames its designs as aiming for "the perfect balance of style, function, and confidence," and says they are made to flatter many body types. The emphasis is on fit across bodies rather than on a single runway silhouette.
California roots
L*Space describes itself as having "deep roots in California cool," and its imagery leans on coastal escapes and slow summer living. The brand's current site speaks of "rich color, seaside glamour, Aperol afternoons, and effortless sensuality."
The company's pages do not name the city where it started or describe its first collection, and this entry does not guess. What the current range shows is a business built on separates: tops and bottoms sold individually, so a customer can buy each in a different size.
What the range covers
The swimwear is the core. L*Space sells bikini tops, bikini bottoms, one-piece swimsuits and cover-ups. Bikini tops draw on the same construction families as lingerie, the triangle bra above all, and bikini bottoms follow the coverage scale of briefs, from full cuts to the cheeky shapes that spread through swimwear in the 2010s.
Clothing has become a large second category, with dresses in several lengths, tops, sweaters, outerwear, shorts, skirts, denim, loungewear and matching sets. An activewear line adds sports bras, tanks, leggings and active shorts and skirts. Accessories, including hats, bags, sandals, sunglasses, towels and hair clips, complete the beach wardrobe.
This is a familiar path for successful swim labels. Swimwear is seasonal and fit-sensitive, so brands that do it well often add clothing that can be sold all year to the same customer.
Swimwear in a lingerie collection
Swimwear belongs in a lingerie encyclopedia because the two share so much. A bikini top and a bra are cut from related patterns and often made in the same factories, and a bikini bottom is a brief built for water. Brands like L*Space sit at that boundary, and their fit claims are judged by the same standards a bra fitter would use.
Where it sells
L*Space runs its own retail stores, listed through a store locator on its website, along with its online store and partnerships with other retailers. The company says its designs have been featured in publications including Vogue, InStyle, Elle, Byrdie and PureWow.

The company's own summary of itself is that it is more than a swimwear brand, and the range bears that out. The part that earned it a place here is still the bikini, built on the founder's first principle that the fit has to come before everything else.
