Planet Blue

Planet Blue

Planet Blue is a Southern California women's fashion retailer founded in 1995 and based in Santa Monica, which grew from a single beach-town boutique into a multi-store and online business selling bohemian clothing, swimwear and soft intimates. It is a shop, not a lingerie manufacturer. Its own description traces its roots to Malibu, Venice and Santa Monica and calls the company "the original architects of the bohemian-chic aesthetic," a claim that is better read as positioning than as history.

The thin public record on Planet Blue

Very little about Planet Blue is documented outside its own channels. There is no Wikipedia article about the retailer, and we found no trade-press history that names its founders or charts its ownership. Its company profile gives a founding year of 1995, a Santa Monica headquarters and a staff of roughly 50 to 200 people. It also says the business began as one boutique specializing in organic apparel before becoming what it calls an international omni-channel retailer.

That leaves obvious gaps. Who opened the first store, which town it was in, and whether the company is still privately held are questions the public sources do not answer. This entry sticks to what can be shown.

Bohemian-chic on the Westside

The phrase Planet Blue uses about itself is a fair guide to its stock. "Boho chic" is the Southern California look of loose dresses, crochet, fringe, worn denim, gauzy cover-ups and stacked jewelry, a style that took its name in the fashion press in the early 2000s and spread through celebrity street photography in Malibu and on the Westside of Los Angeles. A store with addresses in Malibu, Venice and Santa Monica sat right where that photography happened. Planet Blue's profile says as much, describing a business tied to the region's surf and celebrity culture.

The retailer's Instagram account, @shopplanetblue, carries a verified badge and about 324,000 followers. Its bio is pure beach shorthand, palm trees and hibiscus included, and it sends readers to a second account, @shopbluelife, for "our fave pieces." Story highlights point to an outlet, a headquarters, events, styling tips and a recurring feature called "PB babes," built around customers and friends of the shop wearing the clothes.

Swim and intimates in a beach-town boutique

For a store of this kind, swimwear is not a side category. Beach-town boutiques in Malibu and Santa Monica sell bikinis year-round, and a customer who buys a crochet cover-up wants the suit underneath it. The swimwear that suits this look is small and decorative: string and triangle tops, tie-side and cheeky bottoms, crochet trims, washed colors, earthy prints.

The intimates follow the clothes. A boho wardrobe of slip dresses, open-back tops and sheer blouses calls for bralettes, lace bodysuits and wire-free sets rather than molded, structured bras. That is why boutiques in this segment tend to stock soft lace labels such as Only Hearts or the Los Angeles brand For Love & Lemons rather than specialist bra makers. We have not been able to confirm Planet Blue's current lingerie roster from its own site, so those names illustrate the segment rather than a confirmed buying list.

A retailer that makes no fit claims

What Planet Blue does not appear to do matters as much. Nothing in its public profile suggests a fitting service, extended cup sizes or a bra-specialist buyer. Its lingerie and swim exist to finish an outfit. For readers of this encyclopedia that is the relevant distinction: Planet Blue belongs to the history of lingerie as fashion styling, the bralette showing under a loose top, not to the history of lingerie as engineering.

What could not be confirmed in 2026

When we checked the retailer's web presence in October 2026, the shop domain listed on its Instagram profile, shopplanetblue.com, did not resolve, and planetblue.com led only to a web-hosting company's page. That could reflect a technical problem, a change of domain, or a change in the business itself. We have not found a source that explains it, so we draw no conclusion beyond the fact that the online store could not be reached at the address the company itself publishes.

What the record does support is a 30-year run for a Santa Monica boutique name that grew alongside the beach-bohemian look it sold, kept a large social following, and sold its swim and intimates as part of that look rather than as a specialty.
