RVCA is an American surf and skate clothing brand founded in 2001 in Orange County, California, by Pat Tenore and the Hawaiian professional surfer Conan Hayes. It is pronounced "rew-kah," and it is best known for menswear, graphic tees and boardshorts, though its women's line includes bikinis, one-pieces and sports bras. Since 2023 the brand has been owned by Authentic Brands Group, which bought it as part of the Boardriders portfolio.
A name that looks like a typo
The four letters have puzzled shop assistants for two decades. The usual explanation is that the name resembles the Greek word for clothes, "ρούχα," transliterated with a Roman V standing in for the U. The logo carries the idea further: its A is drawn without a crossbar, like a lambda, and the company presents the two converging lines as a symbol of "the balance of opposites." That phrase became the brand's tagline and, more usefully, its design brief, pairing the surf culture of the beach with the art, music and skate culture of the city.
Tenore, Hayes and the Costa Mesa base
The company was set up in Costa Mesa, in the stretch of Orange County that is home to a large share of the American surfwear industry. Conan Hayes brought credibility in the water, and the brand drew on his Hawaiian surf circle. From early on the brand leaned on artists as much as athletes, and its Artist Network Program, usually shortened to ANP, became the vehicle for collaborations with painters, illustrators and photographers whose work appeared on shirts and in stores. The ANP name still appears as a collection on the brand's website.
The core customer was a young man in a graphic tee and boardshorts. That is worth knowing when looking at the women's swim, which was built inside a company whose identity was set by its menswear.
RVCA under Billabong, Boardriders and Authentic
Independence lasted nine years. In July 2010 Billabong International acquired RVCA, adding it to a group that already owned Element and Von Zipper. In 2018 Boardriders, the company formed around Quiksilver, bought Billabong and with it RVCA, which put RVCA under the same roof as Roxy, Quiksilver, DC Shoes and Billabong itself.
The next change came in 2023. In April of that year Authentic Brands Group made a binding offer of about $1.25 billion for Boardriders, and the deal closed that autumn. Authentic is a brand-licensing company, not a manufacturer. It owns the names and licenses the design, production and retail of products to operating partners. In the United States, retail and operations for the brand were run by a licensee, Liberated Brands, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February 2025. The RVCA trademark itself stayed with Authentic Brands Group.
Why the ownership chain matters for swim
Each owner change shifts who actually designs and makes a brand's swimsuits. Under Boardriders, RVCA women's swim sat next to Roxy and Billabong women's, two of the largest surf swim lines in the world. Under a licensing model, the RVCA name can stay constant while the company that develops the product changes. Shoppers rarely see this, but it is the main reason a brand's fit and fabrics can drift from one year to the next.
The women's swim line today
RVCA's website divides women's swim into bikini tops, bikini bottoms, one-pieces and cover-ups, with a separate sport section that includes sports bras and leggings. Themed edits such as "Vacation Essentials" and a Hawaii collection sit alongside the regular range, the second a reminder of Hayes's origins on the islands.
The suits follow the surf-brand template rather than the lingerie-inspired one. Expect triangle and bralette-style tops, ties and adjustable straps, mid-coverage and cheeky bottoms, and prints that echo the brand's art program. Sizing runs on letter sizes, not bra band and cup. Compared with swim specialists such as Frankies Bikinis, RVCA is a lifestyle label first and a swimwear label second, and its bikinis sell to a customer already loyal to the logo.
RVCA's place in a lingerie encyclopedia is therefore a narrow one. It shows how far the surf industry's swim business extends into the territory of bra-style tops and minimal briefs, and how often that business now runs through licensing deals rather than the founders' own workshops. The founders' lambda logo, after two acquisitions and a bankruptcy at the licensee, is still on the hang tags.
