SurfStitch

SurfStitch

SurfStitch is an Australian online retailer of surfwear, swimwear and streetwear, built around the surfstitch.com store and the beach culture of Sydney and the Gold Coast. It is a seller rather than a maker. The bikinis, one-pieces and boardshorts it has carried came from surf labels and swim brands, and its part in the swim business has been distribution and the edit. The operating company, SurfStitch Pty Limited, has held an Australian Business Number since 22 December 2009.

The company records behind the website

SurfStitch's founding story is not on the public record we could check, so this entry is built from registers and secondary sources. The Australian Business Register lists SurfStitch Pty Limited as an active private company with its main business location in the Sydney postcode 2015, which covers Alexandria and Eveleigh. The same entity registered the business name MOHOBU in October 2011 and took out SurfStitch itself as a registered business name in September 2020. An older trading name, Surfstitch.com, appears as cancelled at a 2102 address on Sydney's Northern Beaches, which is surf country by any definition.

A second layer sat above it. SurfStitch Group Limited, an Australian public company, and SurfStitch Holdings Pty Limited were both registered with a main business location in postcode 4220, Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast. Both numbers are now cancelled, the group's from 28 July 2023. The register also lists a cancelled trust for the group's employee equity incentive plans, the kind of structure a listed company sets up to hand shares to staff.

Billabong's 51 percent

The best-documented chapter involves Billabong, the Gold Coast surf company. Billabong owned 51 percent of SurfStitch. In January 2014, in the same season that Oaktree Capital Management and Centerbridge Partners refinanced Billabong's debt in exchange for a 40.8 percent stake, Billabong announced that it was selling its SurfStitch holding together with all of Swell, the US online board-sports retailer it had bought in 2009. Guggenheim Securities ran the sale.

For an indebted surf group, a web shop was a saleable asset. For SurfStitch, the sale ended a period in which its majority owner was also one of its biggest suppliers. Billabong's portfolio at the time included RVCA and the Australian women's label Tigerlily, both bought between 2007 and 2010, so the retailer had been sitting inside a house that made much of what surf retail sells.

SurfStitch had already made a name in e-commerce before that sale. In July 2012 the trade site Power Retail ran the headline "SurfStitch Blitzes Online Retail Industry Awards" over its report on that year's Online Retailer Industry Awards.

A TV channel bought and sold in 17 months

The oddest turn in the record is media. On 15 November 2015, SurfStitch Group Limited acquired Garage Entertainment Aust Pty Ltd, owner of the Garage action-sports television channel, and said it planned to push the channel into Australian and Asian markets. The idea, common among retailers in those years, was that surf films and editorial would sell wetsuits and bikinis. It did not hold. In April 2017, Madman Media Group bought Garage Entertainment and TMG Media from SurfStitch Group "for a nominal cash consideration," and the two sides agreed to negotiate a partnership on content and advertising. A purchase unwound for almost nothing within a year and a half reads as a company retreating to the shop.

The swim drawer of a surf store

For this encyclopedia, SurfStitch matters as a channel. Surf retailers sell a large share of Australia's swimwear, and SurfStitch worked the same online market as The Iconic and ASOS. Wikipedia's article on the Swedish label Cheap Monday names all three as its online stockists. The Fashion Model Directory archive holds SurfStitch imagery from 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2022, including a summer 2016 catalog and a spring-summer 2019 catalog, so summer and swim sat at the front of how the store presented itself. Its sponsorship went the same way: the Australian surfer and model Ellie-Jean Coffey counted SurfStitch among her sponsors, alongside Billabong and Von Zipper.

What passes through a store like this is surf-market swimwear: triangle and bandeau tops, bikini bottoms in cheeky and fuller cuts, one-pieces and rash vests built to survive a wave rather than a sun lounger. That practical bias separates surf retail from the resort-swim boutiques of Miami and Los Angeles. City Beach, the Australian surf and street chain, works the same territory through physical stores.

Where SurfStitch stands now

The current picture is mixed. SurfStitch Pty Limited remains an active, GST-registered company in Sydney, and it secured the SurfStitch business name in 2020. The public group above it has been off the tax register since 2023. When this entry was checked in October 2026, the www address for surfstitch.com redirected to the bare domain, and the bare domain did not resolve. The paper trail ends with a Sydney trading company that has outlasted the Gold Coast holding group once built on top of it.
