Uhlala by LL

Uhlala by LL is a swimwear and resort fashion label based in Bali, Indonesia, founded by Leshea Lewis, a German-born creative director who now lives on the island. It sells bikinis, one-off resort pieces and a small men's swim range online, ships worldwide, and gives its address as Pererenan, a village on Bali's southwest coast. The brand does not publish a founding year, and the museum could not confirm one.

From Germany to Pererenan

The brand's own account is short. Lewis grew up in Germany, moved to Bali, and designs clothes shaped by island life. The business lists a street address in Pererenan, in the Mengwi district of Badung regency, a stretch of rice fields and surf breaks next to Canggu that has filled with cafes, villas and small fashion studios over the past decade. Bali has drawn European designers for decades, partly for the light and the lifestyle and partly because the island has a deep pool of sewing workshops used to small production runs for foreign labels.

Customer service hours are given in European time, which suggests a team and customer base split between Bali and Europe. Shop prices appear in Indonesian rupiah on the domestic site, with free shipping inside Indonesia and international delivery offered.

Collections named like a holiday itinerary

The range is organized by line, and the names say a lot about the mood: La Tropicana, Rio, Le Luxe, Le Basic, Le Briller, L'Ocean, Lolita, Idol and Surf. The French-flavored titles match the brand name, which reads as a play on the exclamation "oh la la." One line is called La Perla, which has nothing to do with the Italian lingerie house of that name.

Beyond swimwear, the catalog covers tops, dresses, pants, jumpsuits, skirts, matching sets, bags, boots and gym wear. In practice it is a beach-to-dinner wardrobe built around the bikini. The archive's 39 records under this name are mostly swim: triangle and bandeau tops, tie bottoms and cut-out styles.

The materials list

Uhlala by LL is more specific about fabric than most small resort labels, and its choices are worth reading closely.

MaterialWhat the brand says
ModalMade from tree-based fibers; soft, lightweight and breathable
Bio-based meshMade partly from renewable resources
VITARegenerated nylon from recovered waste, used for swimwear
Vegan leatherAn animal-free alternative for accessories and some garments

Regenerated nylon has become the standard answer for swim labels that want recycled content without giving up the stretch and recovery of a conventional nylon-elastane blend, and naming the specific fabric is more than many small brands bother to do. Modal has a long record in underwear and loungewear because it holds dye well and stays soft after washing. Using it for resort tops and dresses puts the brand closer to lingerie-weight jersey knit than to stiff beachwear cotton.

The brand frames this modestly. Its own line is that looking good and feeling good "should go hand in hand," and that the fabrics are chosen to perform well and be "a little kinder to the planet." It does not claim certifications the museum could check, and none are claimed here.

What remains unconfirmed

The about page does not explain what "LL" stands for, though the founder's initials are the obvious reading. It gives no founding year, no production volumes and no details of where in Bali the garments are sewn. No Wikipedia article or trade press profile was found, and the museum could not locate an Indonesian company registration that names the brand.

Uhlala by LL among Bali swim labels

Bali-based swim labels are a recognizable group in the collection: small runs, bright prints, string ties, and a customer who buys online from Europe, Australia or the United States after seeing the pieces on social media. Uhlala by LL fits that pattern, with two things that set it apart: a German founder who puts her name, in initials, on the label, and a fabric list that is more specific than most of its neighbors manage.
