Indah

Indah is a swimwear and resort-wear label founded by Libby DeSantis, whose collections are designed and made on the island of Bali, Indonesia. The company says it is marking about 20 years in business, which places its start in the mid-2000s, though it does not publish an exact founding date. Its name is the Indonesian word for beauty, and its catalog runs from bikinis and one-piece suits to crochet tops, dresses and matching sets.

Made in Bali, start to finish

The fact Indah repeats most often about itself is where its clothes come from. The brand states that its pieces are "created and produced on the island of Bali," and it frames that as a matter of principle, saying it has "supported its villages and embraced the beauty of the traditional arts so special to the Balinese people" over its history. It describes its production as slow fashion.

That matters in swimwear more than in most categories. Much of the beach market is cut and sewn in large contract factories and sold under whatever name pays for the run. A label that keeps design and manufacture on one island, and has done so for two decades, is making a different bet: smaller runs, more handwork, and prints and trims that would be awkward to reproduce at volume.

Indah's swim and crochet line

The swim side of the business covers the usual separates and one-pieces, sold with cover-ups to match. Bottoms tend toward the higher-cut and cheeky end of the range, the shapes that Southern California and Australian beach labels made standard in the 2010s. Tops include triangle and bandeau styles as well as more structured cuts.

The crochet work is where Bali shows. Hand crochet is slow, and it is one of the techniques a small workshop can do well that a large factory struggles to price. Indah sells crochet tops and pieces alongside its printed swim, and the combination is typical of resort wear made in Indonesia, where the island's craft traditions and its tourist market meet in the same shop window.

Print first

Indah describes "lavish prints" as one of its trademarks, and its catalog bears that out. The brand does not lean on plain black and nude basics. Its swimsuits, dresses and sets are built around bold patterns and saturated color, which puts it closer to Zimmermann or Mara Hoffman in spirit than to a minimalist swim label, though at a different scale and price.

The copy aims at a particular customer. The brand talks about adventure, travel and "an international community of artists, travelers, and local beauty," and it pitches "bold, sensual designs for fearless women." That is the language of a label made for people on holiday in places like Bali itself, and for those who want to look as if they are.

Ready-to-wear beyond the beach

Over time the catalog has grown past swim. Indah now sells dresses, tops, shorts, skirts, pants and coordinated sets under the same name, most of them light enough to wear over a swimsuit or in heat. The swim business still sits at the center, but the label works as a resort wardrobe rather than a swimwear specialist.

Indah today

The company's website is still trading. Its customer care page lists hours on US Pacific time, and a notice on the site says the customer care team is "currently going through a transition," with limited support while it does. That is the most recent state the sources show: a two-decade-old Bali label, still selling its printed swim and crochet, in the middle of reorganizing how it talks to its customers.
