Vancouver's Quiet Revolution in Sustainable Intimates

Pacific Northwest Values (2019)

Subset was founded in 2019 in Vancouver, British Columbia, by Taylor Burge with a mission to create underwear that was as good for the planet as it was comfortable on the body. The brand emerged from Vancouver's intersection of outdoor culture, environmental consciousness, and Pacific Rim design sensibility.

The name "Subset" suggested something smaller within something larger — a curated selection within the overwhelming universe of underwear options. The brand deliberately limited its product range, offering a focused collection of essential styles rather than the sprawling catalogs that characterized most lingerie brands.

Sustainable Materials

Subset built its products from two primary materials: recycled nylon (from post-consumer waste including fishing nets and carpet fiber) and organic cotton certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard. The brand's commitment to transparency extended to publishing the environmental footprint of each product, including water usage, carbon emissions, and waste generated.

Inclusive Design

From launch, Subset offered sizes XS through 3XL, designed from extensive fit testing across the full range rather than graded from a single base size. The brand's approach to inclusivity was structural rather than cosmetic — different size ranges used different pattern blocks, ensuring that each size was engineered for its specific body proportions.

The Transparency Standard

Subset published detailed information about its supply chain, from raw material sourcing through final assembly. Factory names, locations, and audit results were publicly available — a level of transparency that was rare in any fashion category and virtually unprecedented in affordable intimates.

The brand's pricing reflected a commitment to accessibility: sustainable, inclusive underwear at prices competitive with conventional alternatives. This positioning challenged the assumption that ethical fashion must be premium-priced.
