The Complete Panty Coverage Spectrum: From G-String to Control Brief

The Spectrum

From least coverage to most:

1. G-String

String back, minimal front. The absolute minimum that still counts as underwear. Special occasion only for most wearers.

2. Thong

Narrow fabric strip at the back. The everyday invisible-panty-line solution. Mainstream since the 1990s.

3. Tanga

Partial rear coverage with high-cut sides. The European/Latin American compromise between thong and bikini.

4. Brazilian

Very narrow side seams, moderate rear coverage. Originally beachwear, now a lingerie staple.

5. Cheeky

Standard sides, scooped back panel. The best-selling style in North America since ~2015.

6. Bikini Brief

The default. Mid-rise, full rear coverage, moderate leg opening. The panty that has been the standard since the 1960s.

7. Hipster

Low-rise bikini with wider waistband. The 2000s called — they want their low-rise jeans back. And the panty that went with them.

8. Side-Tie

Bikini coverage with bow ties at the hip. Swimwear crossover and romantic lingerie statement.

9. Seamless

Bikini or hipster shape with laser-cut edges. The technology play — same coverage, zero visibility.

10. Boyshort

Extends down to mid-thigh like micro shorts. Full rear coverage plus anti-chafe thigh protection.

11. Full Brief

Maximum traditional coverage. Waistband at the natural waist, full rear and hip coverage.

12. High-Waist Brief

Full brief that extends above the navel. Retro fashion or everyday comfort depending on the fabric.

13. Control Brief

Compression shapewear. Same coverage as high-waist, but with shaping engineering. The modern girdle.

How to Choose

Under fitted clothing: Thong, seamless, or G-string — VPL is the enemy.

Under loose clothing: Anything you want — nobody can see it.

Under skirts/dresses: Boyshort (anti-chafe) or bikini/cheeky (general).

For a lingerie set: Match the style to the bra's vibe — lace plunge bra pairs with a tanga or cheeky, not a boyshort.

For sleep: Boyshort, hipster, or full brief — comfort over everything.

For working out: Seamless or thong — moisture-wicking fabric, no visible lines under leggings.
