Tori Praver Swimwear

Tori Praver Swimwear

Tori Praver Swimwear is an American swimwear label founded in 2009 by Tori Praver, a model raised on Maui who appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue from 2007 to 2009. The brand sells bikinis and one-pieces in small, cheeky cuts with underwire and tie details, along with a girls' line. Industry listings place it in Los Angeles. Its online store still runs, but the newest collection on it dates from spring 2022, and most of the stock is marked sold out.

A model from Lahaina

Praver was born in San Diego on June 4, 1986 and grew up on Maui, where, according to Wikipedia, she was discovered at 13 in a supermarket in Lahaina. Her modeling career moved fast. She became the youngest face of Guess in 2006, at 17, appeared in three consecutive Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues, worked as a global brand ambassador for the surf company Billabong in 2009, and covered Cosmopolitan and Glamour. Wikipedia lists her agencies as IMG Models worldwide, with Uno in Barcelona, Modellink in Gothenburg and Place in Hamburg.

Wikipedia also notes that her first ambition was fashion design. In 2009, the same year as her Billabong role and her last Sports Illustrated appearance, she launched Tori Praver Swimwear. A swimsuit model starting a swimsuit label is a familiar move, and it is a sound one: few people know better how a bikini behaves on camera, in salt water and under strobe lights.

Hawaii in the cut, Los Angeles on the paperwork

The Fashion Model Directory profile for the brand gives a Los Angeles location and a phone number with Hawaii's 808 area code, which sums up the brand neatly. Its sensibility is island surf culture, while the business sits in the center of the American swimwear trade.

The same directory holds a run of the label's imagery: a Resort 2016 lookbook with the model Hannah Ferguson, a Spring/Summer 2019 lookbook with Brooke Perry, and a Spring/Summer 2020 catalog and runway show, the catalog shot with Maggie Rawlins. Wikipedia describes the line as sold through major retailers, boutiques and online, without naming the stores.

The suits

The brand's own store lists its styles under women's first names, and the product notes show a consistent approach. The core cuts include:

  • Teeni, a sliding triangle top with knotted straps and a side-tie bottom with cheeky coverage.
  • Lani, an underwire triangle top with light shirring and a back hook, paired with the Valerie bottom, which has double shirred straps at each hip.
  • Steph, a seamed underwire bikini top, shown with the high-waisted, high-leg Madison bottom.
  • Billie, a knotted halter triangle, sold with the Joe bottom, whose cinched sides adjust coverage.
  • Mel, an underwire one-piece with a lace-up back and a wrap-around tie, and Amore, a high-leg shirred one-piece with adjustable side cinches.

Underwire in swimwear is the detail that ties this brand to lingerie. A Lani or Steph top is built like a bra, with a wire, seaming and a hook closure, rather than relying on stretch alone. Combined with cheeky bottoms and adjustable ties, the result is swimwear designed to fit like underwear and photograph like a campaign.

Prices on the main line run from about $89 to $205. In December 2020 the brand added a lower-priced "Endless Summer" group, from $22 to $50, made in Sri Lanka, some of it in recycled nylon. The girls' line, sold under the TPD Kids name, mirrors the adult prints in children's cuts.

A store that stopped updating

The online store tells its own story. The Holiday 2021 drop came in sage and sage polka dot. Spring 2022 followed in leopard and ribbed black. After that, the product feed shows only one minor addition, in October 2022, and when we checked in October 2026 most items were sold out. The old toripraver.com address no longer resolves, while toripraverswimwear.com remains live.

Wikipedia describes the swimwear line as continuing, but we could not find evidence of collections after 2022, and the brand has made no public statement about closing that we could locate. The fairest summary is that Tori Praver Swimwear has been dormant since spring 2022, with its store left open.

It sits in a crowded category of model-founded and surf-rooted Californian swim labels, alongside brands such as Frankies Bikinis. What set it apart was the founder's résumé: a girl from Lahaina who wore other people's swimsuits for Sports Illustrated, then spent more than a decade selling her own.
