Cheeky vs tanga gets asked as "are these two names for the same thing?", and the answer is no, although the results can look alike from a distance. A cheeky starts from a bikini brief and removes fabric from the bottom of the back panel, keeping full-width sides. A tanga narrows the whole garment: high-cut sides, slim hips and a small back panel. Both show some of the seat. They get there by different routes.

Where exactly does each one remove fabric?
Think of a plain bikini brief as the starting pattern.
To make a cheeky, the pattern cutter shortens the back panel and curves its lower edge upward, often adding a center-back seam or gathering. The sides and waistband stay the width they were. The front usually does not change at all.
To make a tanga, the cutter works on the sides first. The hip panels are cut high and narrow, sometimes down to a slim band. The back panel shrinks in proportion, keeping a small, fairly flat shape rather than a scoop.
That is why the two look similar in a photo taken from behind and very different from the side.
How can I tell them apart in thirty seconds?
Hold the garment by the waistband and check two things.
- Side width. Measure with your eye from waistband to leg opening at the hip. Full width, close to what a bikini brief has, points to a cheeky. A short or strap-like side points to a tanga.
- Back edge. A curved scoop that leaves the lower seat exposed, often with a seam or ruching at the center, points to a cheeky. A smaller, flatter panel with straight-ish edges points to a tanga.
If both checks agree, you have your answer. If they disagree, the side width wins, because it is the harder thing for a brand to fudge.
Why do brands mix the names up?
Partly language, partly marketing. "Cheeky" is an English retail word, popular with American labels such as Aerie and Victoria's Secret. "Tanga" came into English through Portuguese, where it originally meant a loincloth, and in Spanish and French the same word means a thong. A garment made in one market and sold in another can arrive with either label.

Which one shows fewer panty lines?
Roughly a tie, with a twist. Both leave a short, diagonal edge across the seat, shorter than a bikini brief's. The cheeky has an extra edge risk at the hip, because its full-width side ends in a leg opening that can print through tight pants. The tanga has less fabric at the hip and so less to show there.
Under jeans, neither will show. Under thin jersey, choose whichever one has a bonded or laser-cut edge over a folded elastic one. The edge finish matters more than the name.
Which one suits my shape?
Fit preference is personal, so treat these as tendencies, not rules.
Wider or softer hips
A cheeky's full side panel spreads pressure across the hip and is less likely to cut in. Many wearers with fuller hips find it sits more smoothly than a tanga's narrow side.
Narrower hips or a long-leg look
A tanga's high, narrow side lengthens the leg line, the same reason high-cut swimwear does. On a straight hip there is less for a narrow band to dig into.
Lots of movement
A cheeky usually stays put better during exercise, because the shaped back is held by full-width sides. A tanga can travel more when you are running or cycling.
Which one is older?
Neither has a documented inventor. The tanga's name traces back through Portuguese to the Kimbundu word for a loincloth, according to Wiktionary, and the reduced bikini bottoms of Brazilian beachwear in the 1970s and 1980s helped carry the style into lingerie. The cheeky is a newer retail label.
